Week 3 (y1) Scores Football_rice_team_450

Defense Steps in Up 2nd half as FSU Dominates Syracuse 48-21

FSU went on the road this week to face Syracuse looking to cotinue its strong play to start the season. The Cuse won the toss and elected to receive the ball, and were able to march down the field at will thanks to a great passing attack, culminating in a 12 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Nassib to Alec Lemon. Not to be outdone, Cristian Ponder stepped out and sliced open the Cuse defense with quick efficient passes, and with 2:22 left in the 1st quarter FSU were able to draw level, as Ponder found WR Rodney Smith from 16 yards out for the score.

Syracuse's 2nd possession of the game was as successful as their first, as the FSU defense had no answer to Nassib who was not only finding his targets, but gaining huge yards in doing so. And right at the start of the 2nd quarter the Cuse were back out in front as HB Delonte Carter was able to take it in from 1 yard out. FSU's second possession of the game brought the first punt by either team, as FSU were unable to get anything going and the Cuse took full advantage as their red hot offense scored their third touchdown in as many possessions, this time on a 72 yard catch and run by WR Van Chew to put the Cuse up 21-7 with 3:51 left in the game. Knowing they needed a touchdown before the end of the half, Ponder came out and was on fire, hitting his targets left and right and keeping the Cuse defense on their toes. With 1:31 left in the half, FSU were able to slice into the deficit as HB Jermaine Thomas took it in from 2 yards out. With time left on the clock, Ryan Nassib came out confident that he would be able to add a score for his team, and why shouldn't he have been? To this point he was 10-10 passing and really was able to have his way with FSU's defense. After completing his 11th pass in a row, Nassib dropped back and tried to find his favorite target on the day, Chew (5 catches, 197 yards, 1 TD) but instead found CB Justin Bright, who was finally able to break Nassib's incredible start to the game with this key interception. The FSU offense was able to take full advantage of the turnover and with 28 seconds left in the half Ponder found Rodney Smith yet again for a 21 yard pass as FSU drew level at the half 21-21. Said Ponder after the game:

"That Bright interception was the game changer tonight. We knew that we could score on these guys, but our defense had to step up and show that they could stop them, and that interception followed by our score right before the half really was a momentum changer. You could see our defense start to regain some of its swagger after we were level at halftime and in the second half they stepped up big and shut those guys out."

FSU started with the ball in the 2nd half and were able to take its first lead of the game as Dustin Hopkins kicked a 29 yard FG to make it 24-21 FSU, a lead they would never give up. With 39 seconds left in the quarter Ponder dropped back and found WR Willie Haulstead on a beautiful 21 yard pass (highlight available on the hub). Willie looked to be well covered on the play but Ponder still threw it up there nonetheless as his WR was able to come down with the great catch. That closed out the 3rd quarter with the Seminoles in the lead, 31-21.

Just like the 3rd quarter, the 4th was all about the Seminoles. Justin Bright was able to come up with his second key contribution to this game as the FSU defense laid a BIG hit on HB Delonte Carter, causing him to cough up the ball which was picked up by Bright who took it 67 yards the other way to stretch the FSU lead to 17. After another unsuccessful drive by Syracuse FSU came out and ran the ball, trying to burn the clock, but with about 4 minutes left faced a 3rd and 8 situation. Ponder came out in the I-formation, hoping to catch the Cuse defense off guard. WR Bert Reed was left in one-on-one coverage and Ponder was able to find him perfectly on the slant route and after making 2 defenders miss, Reed took it in from 31 yards out to officially end this one as a competition as with 3:58 left in the game FSU now had a 24 point lead at 45-21. FSU would add an interception on their next drive, by CB Ochuko Jenije and would tack on a 39 yard FG with 1:52 left as the final score read FSU 48 SYRACUSE 21.

GAME NOTES:

*Nassib was able to shread FSU's pass defense, ending the day 16-22 for 366 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 INTS.

*His favorite target on the day was without question Van Chew, who had 5 catches for 197 yards and a score. Chew was also targeted on the 2 interceptions.

*While the FSU pass defense struggled, the run D did not, limiting Cuse to 40 yards on 26 carries, roughly a 1.5 average on the ground (making Nassib's day even that more impressive).

*FSU did not come out of this one unscathed, as top CB Jenije as well as 5th WR Christian Green were injured in this one and will both miss some game time. The injury to Jenije hurts the team the most, as he was the #1 CB on the depth chart, look for rookie phenom Justin Bright to prove himself as he now moves into the starters role as the #2 CB behind Greg Reid.

Feastin'
TCU forces 6 turnovers in 42-28 victory over Baylor

Week 3 (y1) Scores Tcu12

The Horned Frogs have had a rough go as of late. Quarterback Andy Dalton has been put under the microscope because of his playing lately, or lack thereof. Today was no different. Dalton and the Horned Frogs came into the game 0-2, and with little hope of making a legitimate bowl game. But under new Head Coach Bobjr, today there was some excitement. The players showed the fans why the Horned Frogs brought back a Texas coach. With 4 turnovers in the first quarter alone, the Frogs were able to jump out to a 21-0 lead and that would be all they needed. With such a big cushion, TCU decided to go to a more conventional zone style of defense. Baylor QB Robert Griffin would end up shredding this defense, and brought the Bears all the way back to tie the game at 28-28.

In the first quarter, TCU scored on 2 touchdown runs by Matthew Tucker (yes he had -5 yards on 21 carries). This would be his ONLY bright spot on the afternoon. TCU also got a gift from Baylor. Baylor's running back was trying to fight for extra yardage and was hit and fumbled the ball. With no one insight for 15 yards Cornerback Devin Johnson scooped up the loose ball, and took it to pay dirt to give TCU a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. This is where the game got crazy. TCU intercepted an option play, and Robert Griffin made them pay with a 13 yard touchdown pass. Within a span of 3 minutes in the second quarter the score ended up 28-21 TCU. A complete blur. Griffin was great after his first quarter debacle, and with :54 to go before halftime Griffin hit Terrance Williams for a game tying score. Like I stated, he shredded the Horned Frogs zone. 28-28 at halftime. A huge halftime adjustment happened for the Frogs. Senior QB Andy Dalton was benched due to a poor performance (4-16 for 104 yards in the first half). In comes Casey Patchall. Even though Patchall doesn't have much rivalry game experience, this kid really showed moxie on the field. Casey would not turn the ball over, and the Horned Frog defense ended up going back to their gameplan. Stopping Robert Griffin.

Griffin didn't throw another touchdown pass, or a pass over 20 yards for the rest of the game. Not to mention, he wasn't able to run with a constant spy tracking him. The Frogs would add a touchdown late in the third quarter when Patchall stepped up in the pocket and drilled a pass to Bart Johnson. 35-28, the go ahead score. Nothing else would happen for Baylor. Matthew Tucker added a game clinching touchdown late in the fourth to put it at 42-28. Amon G Carter Stadium went crazy as TCU defeated their longtime rival from the old Southwest Conference. TCU is now 1-2, and it is definitely looking up for the Horned Frogs.

Week 3 (y1) Scores ScreenHunter_02Sep211932[center]

Team Leaders:

Utah
T. Cain 19-27 321 yards 2 touchdowns 0 interceptions 9 rushes 32 yards 3 touchdowns
E. Wide 9 rushes 33 yards
M. Asiata 16 rushes 61 yards
J. Brooks 5 catches 85 yards 1 touchdown
S. Siliga 4 tackles 2 sacks

New Mexico
B. Holbrook 13-27 134 yards 1 interception
D. Dennis 12 rushes 107 yards 1 touchdown
T. Kirk 5 catches 80 yards
S. Merritt 3 tackles 1 sack

Coach MG had this to say after the game...

" I am really proud of our team, especially Terrance. He really got thrown into the fire after Jordan went down, but he has been nothing short of spectacular every down. He is making all the right reads throwing and with the option and he really has our teams moral back up. If he keeps this up he might be a heisman hopeful. Our defense needs to work on our run d, but I am not going to sit here and nitpick a 41-10 victory. I am excited for next week against San Jose State...get back to Utah and get a win in front of the home fans. That's about it, gonna get a good week of practice in and we will be ready next week."

Escaping the Upset
The Hokies prevail at home against unranked Connecticut 14-10.
Week 3 (y1) Scores LegendsY1Week3Pic

What a let down for the Virginia Tech fans. After being honored with a #2 ranking in the polls, the highest in I don't know how many years, the Hokies must have gotten a big head. We did, coming out passing on the first possession instead of sticking to our gameplan of utilizing the workhorses known as Williams & Evans. Down 10-0 at the half, Coach Frank Beamer reamed into his team. "How can we go from our past two weeks of play to now this!" That gave the Hokies a bit of inspiration as they put their egos aside and came out tough in the second half.

Tyrod had another tough day in the passing game. I said it last week and I'll say it again, the Hokies will not go far if they cannot get the job done with the aerial game. Ryan Williams was stopped pretty much all game despite his 92 yards, he had to rush 27 times to achieve it. Darren Evans did a good job spelling Williams as he went for 31 yards on 5 carries with 1 touchdown. The biggest play of the day was Rashad Carmichael's pick. The Huskies were looking to make it a 13 or perhaps 17-0 lead when Carmichael took a gamble that paid off as he jumped a pass by Frazier.
